So if I'm in Brooklyn talking to someone in Newark, this should work?

xevoxrsx 9/13/2017 7:47 am

Could this run off just the included USB cable as a power source? if so, Im all in!

or is it only used for charging the batteries?

Negative. These need almost a clear line of sight. The mileage they list is laughable. Sometimes you can be a couple hundred feet away and not connect. Even then, electrical interferences will cause issues. No rhyme or reason where and when they are able to communicate to another unit. These are low powered toys. Probably worth the $20, but no way worth list price. That goes for all Cobra (toy) HAM walkie talkies. You probably want to get a HAM license to use these as well. Easy to learn and test with many HAM radio groups and locations.

baofeng uv5r + CHIRP = no brainer

I think these are definitely worth the $20. I'm in for two pair. I needed an NOAA radio receiver anyway for emergencies. I'll give away the other pair as a Christmas present or something.

CHIRP Radio Software. CHIRP is a free, open-source tool for programming your amateur radio....

Only if you have a ham radio license. I personally like the 82HP model much better.

tunus 9/13/2017 9:01 am

These radios are low power and use FRS bands, so no ham radio license is required. The advertised range is in ideal conditions with no interference.

The Baofeng 82hp looks better, has a better speaker and built in LED light. It is part of Baofeng's professional line and overall better made but can often be purchased for the price of uv5r.

Only buying this after Irma almost scared the shit out of Florida & having a Weather Radio seemed important. I had plenty of power banks to keep my devices charged, but it could have only lasted me a day or two. Weather Radio + AA Batteries = set for Irma 2.0.
